Back pain · Sciatica · Disc-related pain
When back pain starts affecting how you sit, walk, work or sleep, it becomes much more than a back problem.
At Life Meridian, we treat back pain, sciatica and symptoms associated with disc problems through individualised acupuncture treatment. We look at where your pain starts, where it travels, what movements affect it and what you’ve already tried.
Acupuncture is used to manage the pain and the other symptoms a herniated disc causes. Research supports acupuncture for some forms of low-back pain.
Understand the problem
Back pain can be a dull ache, a sharp catch on movement, a band of tightness, or pain that travels into the buttock and down the leg. It can start after a single lift or fall, or build up over months of long sitting, repetitive work, reduced activity or an old injury.
The cause matters, because similar pain can come from muscle and joint strain, a disc problem, arthritic change in the spine, or a nerve under pressure.
The consultation covers where the pain travels, what makes it worse and what relieves it, how long it has been present, what treatment you have already had, and how it affects your movement and sleep. Bring any scans and reports, and a current list of your medicines.

Treatment is tailored according to your symptoms and diagnosis.
The Life Meridian pathway
Acupuncture and acupressure are the treatment. What we use depends on the assessment. At the first visit you are told what is proposed, how often, and when progress will be reviewed.
Symptoms, medical history, scans and reports, current medicines, daily routine, movement limits and sleep.
Where treatment is suitable, the methods used include acupuncture, acupressure and seed therapy, chosen for your case.
Practical guidance on movement, pacing, posture and rest, matched to your work and daily routine.
Comfort and function are checked at agreed points, and treatment is continued, changed, stopped, or referred on.

Your first visit
Questions about your pain, medical history, current medicines and previous scans.
If acupuncture or acupressure is suitable, the points and methods are explained before anything starts. Needles are sterile and single-use. Say so at any point if a position or a needle is uncomfortable.
You are told what to expect over the next day or two and when to come back. Prescribed medicine and physiotherapy continue unless the doctor who prescribed them changes it.
